Israel decided to drop by Beirut with some fireworks, leveling parts of the city center and leaving at least six dead in its wake. Not content with just one deadly performance, they’ve promised there’s more where that came from. Because who doesn’t love an encore, right?
Since this whole mess started, Israeli airstrikes have claimed nearly 2,000 lives and displaced 1.2 million people, sending them packing as their homes turned into rubble. The latest “show” in downtown Beirut saw Israeli jets targeting the Al Bashura district, where they managed to kill six and injure another seven unlucky souls. Two people died on the spot, while the others didn’t make it through their hospital stays, succumbing to their injuries. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health is not exactly thrilled with the results.
Oh, and just to make things spicier, the bombs allegedly used here are—you guessed it—phosphorus bombs, a lovely little war crime appetizer that the international community tends to frown upon. But when has that ever stopped anyone, right?
This is actually Israel’s second love letter to Beirut this week. Just a few days ago, they hit the Cola neighborhood, wiping out three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). That’s one way to get their attention.
Israel has been pounding southern Beirut with regular strikes, hitting areas like Dahye, a Hezbollah stronghold that has become ground zero for some of the fiercest attacks. Just last week, Israel killed the Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in a bombing that literally shook the city to its core. And as if that wasn’t enough warning, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee kindly told Dahye residents to get out of dodge—at least 500 meters away from any future targets. Casual, right?
Since this conflict kicked off, Israel and Hezbollah have been going at it, with violence escalating to levels not seen since their last big brawl in 2006. As for Gaza, where all this chaos started back in October 2023, it seems like the rest of the region is now also getting its share of the “fun.” Entire towns have been flattened by Israel’s relentless bombing campaign, leaving little more than dust, debris, and shattered lives behind.
But hey, it’s not like anyone was using those buildings anyway.
